First, a tone-setter. Think of Avengers Infinity War and Avengers Endgame. Okay. Now condense them both into 90 minutes. And instead of the heroes dying tragically but rather painlessly and non-violently to the Snap, imagine Thanos and his cronies personally ripping them a new one in gory and horrible fashions before ravaging the Earth, including its resources. Imagine Spider-Man or Hawkeye being torn in half by a monster with their entrails spilling out. Imagine Bucky being shot in the head randomly with barely any fanfare. Imagine Kamala Khan or Miles Morales being introduced into the universe as lifeless corpses. Imagine Captain America standing tall against Thanos only to be vaporized by Thanos' fuck-off space laser. And then imagine the big "All the Warriors" or whatever battle resulting in even more meaningless and random deaths and the destruction of the Earth, spitting on everyone's sacrifices. Finally, remember how Iron Man said that they should use the Infinity Stones only to bring people back, and not undo the results of the timeskip like his daughter? Well, do that, but just fucking, just undo everything. The whole timeline. None of it happens. Just start from scratch. Imagine all that but with DC heroes. That's Justice League Dark Apokolips War. When I first watched it, I was amused. It was dark. The stakes were high. Every notable character in the DC Animated Movie Universe came back to fight, the grand finale to a seven-year-old movie franchise. It was tragic, emotional, and epic. The next day I looked back and thought "Did I really just watch a DC movie where Aquaman and Hal Jordan dying was just a footnote? Where a dying John Stewart recited the Green Lantern Creed to empower himself with the Power Battery, only to have a brainwashed Batman dump the Earth's lava on his head? Where John Constantine implied he fucked King Shark? I did. I did watch that movie. Despite me describing the horrifically, borderline-edgy scenes which constitute about 80% of the movie, Apokolips War does give you some laughs. For example, there's Harley Quinn quoting Looney Tunes in between the merciless murders of our beloved characters. Constantine, Etrigan, and Lex Luthor are actually legitimately funny. And then there's Nightwing; people complain a lot about how Dick is treated like a jobber in these movies. How does his story end? Well, he's murdered by Darkseid's forces, which would be fitting enough, but then Damian resurrects Dick in the Lazarus Pit, which ends up driving him insane. And no, he doesn't snap out of this or come back with a cavalry or anything. It's just a thing that happens. Somehow he got it worse than the dozens of the heroes dying. I mean, before the universe resets, he gets to rest in Starfire's (cold, robotic) lap again, so that's something. I actually laughed pretty hard at that. EDIT: Also there's a scene where Constantine asks Swamp Thing why he's doing nothing to help fight Darkseid. He says that he doesn't care about humans, only the Earth. Constantine then tells him that the giant fuck-off machine that is syphoning magma from the Earth's core that is literally in view is going to, guess what, destroy the Earth, and Swamp Thing goes "Oh! Shit, you're right! " This movie has a lot of weird moments. Also Darkseid is a very underwelming villain. There is no particular plan or strategy that results in him kicking the heroes' ass, he just made Parademons as strong as Doomsday and let them loose. No other New Gods appear (does New Genesis even exist in this universe? ), the villains aren't villains so there's no other threat to deal with. Because of that there's also not much story to it besides "beat Darkseid". I did enjoy a lot of moments, though. John Constantine is practically the main character and he's Constantine, which is always great. The part where Trigon possessed Superman and kicks Darkseid's ass, and then Superman kicks Trigon out of his body and gets all of his powers back, including his costume (which doesn't really make sense but who honestly cares), and then kicks Darkseid's ass, and finally Trigon getting his full power back and then once more kicking Darkseid's ass, before trapping him in a void so he can kick his ass for all eternity, was pretty fun. Although, Trigon suddenly caring for Raven and sacrificing himself kind of came out of nowhere. All movie he was going "let me out of this crystal bitch, or I'll kill the boy (Damian) (also Raven and Damian are a couple in this movie)! " and now he's like "you are the best thing that has ever happened to me and I love you. " Weird. The movie is basically DC's Ultimatum, where it puts shock value over a decent story. Ironically, despite the Infinity War / Endgame comparisons, I recommend not actually watching the other movies if you're wathcing this one. Nothing in Apokolips War is new, if you have a passing knowledge of DC Comics, then you should pretty much know what's going on and who the characters are, and if you don't, well, most of them don't have any lines and only exist to die, so who gives a shit? Being attached to this specific universe only hurts you. Everyone dies, there's no hope, and it all gets undone. And that's pretty depresisng.
